Whereas metro rail And road tunneling Projects get all the attention on TMRG, here’s a different kind of tunnel project that I felt needed more visibility.

T87 – A Teratec Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) deployed by Soma Enterprise Ltd for a water project in Mumbai covered an impressive distance of 526 meters in December 2021 without much fanfare.

This remarkable feat was recorded by the 3.2 m diameter open rock TBM for the 9.683 km Amar Mahal-1 project of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to meet the ever-increasing water demand of East Mumbai.

The tunnel, named AMT-I, originates from Hedgewar Udyan (Amar Mahal) where the tunnel will be tapped from Mumbai-II and Mumbai-III on the Eastern Express Highway. It will run from Hedgewar Udyan (Amar Mahal) to Parel via Wadala (Pratiksha Nagar).

The AMT-1 project consists of two TBM drives of total length of 9,683 meters between three shafts located at Hedgewar Udyan, Pratiksha Nagar and Parel at an average depth of 80 to 90 meters for water transfer.

SOMA’s T-87 has excavated more than 1 km in three months so far, while maintaining an average progress of 300+ meters per month.

Teratech has become India’s leading TBM supplier with more than 40 TBMs of various sizes, ranging from 1.4m to 10m, for various projects such as metro rail (see Fig. Delhi-Meerut, put metro, Mumbai Metro), water, water, sewage and mining projects. These have been deployed by major contractors like Larsen & Toubro, HCC, Afcons and others.

The project is one of several quietly being executed by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to augment water sources, improve distribution systems and manage water demand and supply.

One of the major challenges of the AMT-1 was assembling the TBM at a depth of 110 meters inside the tail tunnel of the Amar Mahal job site, where space was extremely tight.

The first breakthrough at Pratiksha Nagar shaft is expected in Q1 2023. After that, the machine will proceed to Parel.

Patel Engineering Limited, working on the second part of the project called AMT-II, has also deployed the Teratec Open Rock TBM. That machine was called the T-83. is called passed the factory acceptance test in September 2020 and is excavating from Amar Mahal (Hedgewar Udyan) to Trombay Low-Level Reservoir (TLLR) at a depth of 5.35 km and up to Trombay High-Level Reservoir (THLR) at depths between 80 and 90 m.

i have covered 100+ TBM Successes On my website, and monitoring their progress I have noticed that Teratec’s robust tailor-made machines have never accounted for any major downtime. Their TBMs are performing excellently under various geological conditions ranging from soft soil to light to hard rock.

In fact, many a times Teratec machines have completed their work much ahead of schedule as seen in Lucknow Metro Where S52 (Gomti) and S53 (Ganga) were deployed to build the package LKCC-06 in record time.

Some of the reasons include quick availability of parts from Teratech’s central warehouse in Mumbai and a well mobilized field service staff (including). Overseas TBM Specialist) for posting to any workplace within short notice.
