Kolkata Metro Token System

Kolkata Metro introduced Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tokens by Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) in partnership with Keltron in August 2011.

Token System

The old magnetic strip reader gates were replaced with new RFID readers. The gates are AFC types of gates.

These tokens are touched on the machine to enter the station, while to exit from the destination station, it is required to submit the token into the machine. The current tokens are coin-shaped and made of plastic.

The passengers can purchase these tokens from the ticket counters, and travel in kolkata metro.

Kolkata Metro India’s first metro railway network has developed a token with ‘Chandrayaan-3’ logo on it. This new token was introduced on October 10, 2023. The design of this new token has been unveiled by Saumitra Biswas, Principal Chief Operations Manager, Metro Railway at Metro Rail Bhavan.

Rules for Smart Token:

  • Token is meant for single journey. There is no provision for return journey token
  • Token is valid for the day of purchase for a particular zone of travel
  • Once purchased across a booking counter, passenger must enter the paid area within 45 minutes from the time of purchase.
  • Token is captured at the exit gate on completion of journey.
  • Lost token is not replaced under any circumstances.

QR Code Ticket

The Kolkata Metro has introduced a QR code ticketing system on Green Line (Line 2), Howrah maiden to Esplanade metro station. This type of ticket plan to extend this system to more lines in the future.

Commuters can also opt for mobile QR code tickets via the Metro Ride Kolkata app. Only one person can use a mobile ticket at a time. Users have the option to take a screenshot of the QR code ticket for easy access during travel.

Rules for QR Code Ticket:

  • Purchase of QR code paper ticket and entry into paid area at the station is 45 minutes and between entry to exit is 120 minutes.
  • QR code paper ticket cancellation is not permitted under any circumstances except during service disruption of 30 minutes or more.
  • In case, a passenger damages the QR code printed on the ticket, the ticket may not get accepted at the Entry or Exit gate.
