Pune, India (Urban Transport News): Sentient Labs is an R&D innovation lab based on technologies incubated by KPIT Technologies Limited, which showcased India’s first truly indigenously developed Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus. The hydrogen fuel cell technology has been developed in collaboration with CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research)-NCL (National Chemical Laboratory) and CSIR-CECRI (Central Electrochemical Research Institute).

Sentient Labs vision is to create technology solutions for sustainable mobility with the current emphasis on hydrogen powered technologies. It has identified bottlenecks in battery technology, fuel cell technologies and technologies for hydrogen production. Recently, Sentient announced the world’s first technology that generates hydrogen directly from agricultural residues for use in fuel cell-powered vehicles. The technology adds to the line-up of efforts around sustainable mobility.

Apart from the hydrogen fuel cell technology, Sentient Labs has indigenously designed and developed other key components such as balance of plant, powertrain and battery pack. All these components have been deployed in a 9 meter, 32-seater, air-conditioned bus. It is designed to provide a range of 450 km using 30 kg of hydrogen. A modular architecture allows for design changes to suit the requirements of the range and operating conditions.

The fuel cell uses hydrogen and air to generate electricity to power the bus. The only way out of the bus is water, so it’s probably the most eco-friendly mode of transportation. For comparison, a diesel bus plying on long distance routes typically emits 100 tonnes of CO2 annually and there are over one million such buses in India.

Putting both the technologies together by Sentient can be an environmentally friendly and economically attractive proposition. While hydrogen production technology can provide farmers with an alternative source of revenue, replacing diesel buses with hydrogen fuel cell buses will drastically improve air quality and reduce oil import costs.

Sentient Labs is passionate about supporting India’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for transportation by providing clean and smart technology.

Ravi Pandit, Chairman, Sentient Labs said,

We are proud to launch the indigenously developed Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Bus. A strong technical team worked on several technical components with CSIR-NCL. This hydrogen mission will go a long way in empowering a self-reliant India and importantly sustainable mobility. We envision that the solution will see widespread adoption driven by multiple partnerships. Our efforts will also be instrumental in enabling vehicle manufacturers and suppliers to build a net-zero carbon path in India.
